Eyebrows: Encyclopedia of cosmetic surgery

Beautifully curved eyebrows emphasize the natural beauty. The beauty ideals of the eyebrows are influenced by culture and current fashion trends. There are different opinions about where the highest point of a beautiful eyebrow should be. According to Westmore, the highest point of the eyebrow lies in a vertical line at the outer limit of the iris (outer limbus). According to Lamas, the highest point of the eyebrow is along a line from the outer limit of the iris to the lateral wing of the nose. According to Anastasia, the highest point of the eyebrow should be along a line from the center of the tip of the nose to the center of the pupil.

Ideally, the highest point of the eyebrow is in proportion to the highest point of the eyelid crease and the highest point of the upper lash line (Vaca EE, et al. 2019, Aesthetic Surgery Journal). The height of the outer eyelid is in proportion to the height of the mobile eyelid. At the inner border of the iris (inner limbus), the ratio is 1.5 to 1. At the outer transition zone (outer limbus), the ratio is 3 to 1. The eyebrows are usually located at the level of the upper bone rim of the orbit in males and a few millimeters above in females.

The eyebrows should be approximately 2.5 centimeters above the pupils in women (McKinney P, 1991, Aesthetic Plast Surg). The distance from the upper eyelid crease to the lower edge of the eyebrow averages fifteen millimeters (Connell BF, 1989, Aesthetic Plast Surg). The creation of the skin and connective tissue can lead to drooping of the eyebrows (brow ptosis). There are numerous techniques, such as the forehead lift, the eyebrow lift, the browplasty and the browpexy with which the shape and position of the eyebrows can be corrected. Removal of excess skin generally results in more significant and permanent changes (Cilento BW, Johnson CJ, 2009, Arch Facial Plast Surg). The combination of non-surgical and surgical techniques, including muscle relaxing agents and needling, result in the most natural and effective eyebrow beautification.
