A beautiful Jawline: Jaw & Chin Correction

The so-called jawline is the English term for the chin-jaw contour. The jawline refers to the transition from the face to the neck.

Angular lines reinforce masculine traits. A clearly contoured jawline gives a younger appearance in both men and women. Striking contours emphasize an attractive face. A receding chin (particularly small chin), a double chin and sagging cheeks can be corrected minimally invasively and effectively, resulting in a beautiful jawline and chin line. You can find out how useful a fat-away injection is for reducing a double chin on the fat-away injection page. Do you struggle with a weak jawline? Don’t like your profile or half-profile? Do you want to feel absolutely comfortable in your skin?

Opt for a chin and jawline to fall in love with:

  • Ein strafferes und jüngeres Erscheinungsbild
  • Sich aus allen Blickwinkeln gefallen
  • Attraktivität durch ansprechende Kieferpartie
  • Professionelle Beratung

The beauty features of the chin-jaw contour are very different for men and women. Each feature is best viewed from a particular angle, usually from the side or front. The following properties characterize the shape of the Jawline from a technical point of view:

  • The mandibular angle (angulus mandibulae) is a defining feature of the chin-jaw contour that can best be assessed from a side view. The mandibular angle results from the angle of intersection between the mandibular body and the mandibular branch, which lies directly in front of the ear. The mandibular branch is relatively vertical in males and has a gentle angle in females. The angle of the mandible is slightly greater in women than in men, averaging 120 degrees.
  • The width of the lower jaw in relation to the width of the cheeks is perceived when viewed from the front and intuitively influences the perception of beauty. A width ratio of the mandible to the cheek of 75 percent is perceived as particularly attractive in women (Wu TY, et al., 2020, J Chin Med Assoc).
  • The cervico-mandibular angle is the intersection angle of the mandibular plane and the cervical plane. The angle is evaluated in the lateral view of the face. An angle of 90 to 105 degrees is considered juvenile (Naini FB et al, 2016, J Maxillofac Oral Surg).
  • The characteristics of the chin, such as the height, width, and the board or recess of the chin or mandibular body, respectively, have a significant effect on the jawline. The chin protrudes about as far as the lower lip in men, while the lower lip protrudes 1 to 2 millimeters beyond the chin in women (Vanaman Wilson MJ, et al, 2018, Dermatol Surg).
  • Fullness and the position of the subcutaneous fatty tissue as well as the quality of the skin are further characteristics that are examined during a personal consultation at CenterPlast. (CenterPlast also offers an appointment online).

Why do many opt for a Jawline and chin augmentation?

The desire to improve physical appearance is not a new phenomenon of digitalization or the mediatization of society. Man has always tried to beautify his outer appearance, whether with clothes, jewelry, makeup, perfume or piercings. The pursuit of beauty is possibly in the genes of man, like the courtship dance in birds of paradise. The desire to beautify one’s appearance and diminish the signs of aging can be an expression of self-esteem.

The use of make-up and skin and hair care products can increase subjective well-being. Studies show that hyaluronic acid treatment positively affects appearance in many aspects, such as symmetry, impression of likeability, youthfulness, confidence, attractiveness, and self-confidence [1].

Weight fluctuations, a hereditary predisposition or age-related changes can alter the signs of youthfulness and beauty of a chin-jaw contour. In addition, the skin can sag with age due to decreasing elasticity, and the defined facial contours can be lost. This is also referred to as the sacking effect. The motives for a correction of the Jawline or a chin augmentation of our patients are very individual:

  • I want to look as good as possible
  • I want to look more attractive
  • I like to be aesthetically attractive

Training the Jawline: Useful or pointless?

The internet is a great source of information when used with a healthy distrust. Posts on Instagram represent the opinions of individuals. Influencers usually receive benefits for the recommendations they make. People without medical training praise tools for training facial muscles and improving jawline on social networks. What to make of this?

Unlike the biceps muscle, the facial muscles do not serve to transmit force. Therefore, frequent blinking or frequent kissing does not lead to muscle gain. Facial muscles are also called mimic muscles because they are responsible for facial expressions. Facial muscles contain entirely different muscle fibers than skeletal muscles [2]. Unlike skeletal muscles, facial muscles are not surrounded by a layer of loose connective tissue (epimysium).

The masseter muscle, as its name suggests, is not responsible for facial expression but for food intake. It transmits a considerable force to the teeth. The masseter muscle can get bigger in people who chew a lot of gum or grind their teeth at night. In these cases, the lower jaw appears wider and the shape of the face disproportionate and angular.

The jawline is essentially determined by the fat pads of the face, the elasticity of the skin or by an inherited shape of the jawbone. Hyaluronic acid injections can define a prominent and attractive jawline in certain cases. The efficacy and safety of filler treatment, as well as patient satisfaction, have been proven in several scientific studies (Bertossi D, et al, 2020, Aesthet Surg J; Beer K, et al, 2020, Dermatol Surg; Ogilvie P, et al, 2020, Aesthet Surg J).

Which filler for jaw augmentation

Relatively firm hyaluronic acid gels (high modulus of elasticity) with high viscosity (high modulus of viscosity) are suitable for jawline contouring. For the contouring of the chin-jaw line we use, among others, the following products:

  • Juvéderm® Volux TM from the Allergan company.
  • Juvéderm® Voluma TM from the company Allergan
  • Belotero® Volume from the company Merz
  • Teosyal RHA®4 from the company Teoxane

How is the Jawline injected?

Many patients request a chin-jaw contour injection immediately following an examination and consultation. After a treatment plan is made, a local anesthetic cream (local anesthetic) is applied so that you do not feel any pain throughout the treatment. After an exposure time of about 30 minutes, the skin is carefully disinfected several times. One to two millilitres of hyaluronic acid are injected into four to five areas on each side using a fine needle.

You will only notice a slight feeling of pressure from the injection at the previously defined and marked points. After the injection, a gentle massage and cooling is beneficial to prevent minimal redness and slight swelling. This way there will be no bruising. You will be given a filler passport, which notes the product used and the batch number.

Each hyaluronic acid filler differs slightly in its ability to bind water. Therefore, the volume may still increase very discreetly in the first few days. For this reason, it is advisable to arrange a check-up appointment one to two weeks after the treatment in order to check the treatment result. On this occasion, a follow-up injection can be performed if necessary.

Dr. Santos Stahl will explain to you what you should pay attention to after the injection. In urgent cases we are of course available for you at any time after treatment.

Jawline correction with hyaluronic acid for women

When injecting hyaluronic acid as part of facial design for women, there are various aspects to consider. In women, a V-shaped contour of the facial features looks particularly attractive (“V-shape” face shape). The softer contours of the lower jaw and the more delicate skin require less volume and a smooth gel. Depending on the individual findings, a shapely Jawline is achieved in women by injecting at four points. This emphasizes the expressive female contours of the jaw.

For a well-proportioned, harmonious and youthful result, it is often useful to include the cheekbones in the treatment plan. Injecting the cheeks accentuates the cheekbones and achieves a slight lifting effect. Chin augmentation sharpen a narrow chin and emphasize a V-shape of the face.

A clear jawline is a masculine trait and is considered a sign of physical fitness and athleticism [3]. Men with an angular and symmetrical jawline and a clear contour of the lower jaw and chin are considered very attractive [4].

Men’s jawline treatment emphasizes clean lines and usually has a pronounced chin around the result if desired. For a permanent result, firmer gels are injected near the jawbone. The treatment with about two milliliters of hyaluron per side gives the face strong masculine contours at the jaw and a prominent chin. Jawline correction with hyaluronic acid is fast, effective, and safe [5].

Another non-surgical alternative is autologous fat grafting. Hereby a permanently rejuvenated and natural appearance is achieved. Autologous fat is the closest thing to an ideal tissue filler, as allergy or rejection is impossible with autologous cells. In addition, an autologous fat treatment visibly optimises the appearance and quality of the skin.

Autologous fat injections have been shown to improve skin spots, wrinkles, skin texture, redness and refine skin pores. Since the body’s own cells are transplanted, it must be expected that a certain proportion will be degraded and metabolized. Approximately 56 and 78 percent of the injected volume is retained in the long term [6].

If you wish, a second autologous fat injection can be performed after four to six months. Fat cell transplantation consists of several steps, and at CenterPlast each step has been perfected with the goal of increasing the rate of fat cell growth. A beautiful extraction, preparation and injection ensure that the cells heal promptly in the desired part of the body. The fat cells are usually removed from the abdomen without visible scars.

On the chin we inject an average of 5 millilitres of own fat (2 to 15 millilitres). For a permanent result, an average of 10 millilitres of the patient’s own fat per side is injected into the lower jaw (5 to 25 millilitres). More than 90 percent of patients are satisfied with the results even after 2 years [7]. More about fat cell transplantation.

Autologous fat for Jawline correction

With age, facial contours change predictably. The skin tends to become thinner and lose elasticity. The connective tissue slackens and fat pads of the cheeks, which are not visible in youth, sag. This can lead to the formation of drooping cheeks, which disguise the contours of the lower jaw.

A thread lift can be a useful addition to a hyaluron treatment. Non-degradable sutures such as the original Aptoslift can become visible and palpable over the months and years. Therefore, CenterPlast only uses self-dissolving (absorbable) threads for a thread lift (Happy lift™ and Silhouette™).

To a certain extent, the skin above and below the jawline can be tightened without surgery, thus lifting the cheek fat pads. However, the effect cannot be compared with a cosmetic surgery such as a face lift. You can read more about this surgery on the face lift page. Therefore, if your expectations cannot be met with the goals of a thread lift, the experts at CenterPlast will advise you against this treatment and, if you are interested, will also explain the alternative surgeries that can achieve your desired result.

Implants can bring about a significant change in specific areas and are therefore generally used to correct congenital malformations or changes in shape following illness or injury. For jaw and chin correction, implants can be inserted at the chin and at the jaw angle. Facial implants are most commonly made of porous polyethylene (Medpor®) or silicone. On the chin, silicone implants are usually inserted through a small incision under the chin. In up to 55 percent of cases, slight bone loss (0.5 to 2 millimeters) is observed in the area of the silicone implant on the chin after a few years. At the angle of the jaw, polyethylene implants are usually inserted through the mucosa of the mouth.

The average complication rate of mandibular implants is approximately 4.7 percent, with inflammation/wound healing problems and implant protrusion/slippage being the most common complications [8].

The side effects of hyaluronic acid jaw and chin correction are much less compared to implants. In the rare event that a patient is not satisfied with the effect of hyaluronic acid, the effect can be reversed with enzyme injections.

For a chin augmentation of two to three millimeters, hyaluronic acid injections are the treatment of choice. Jawline fillers are a safe, effective and long-lasting alternative to implants for contouring in the chin and jawline.

Jawline correction with implants

Implants can bring about a significant change at specific points and are therefore usually used to correct congenital malformations or changes in shape following illness or injury. To correct the chin-jaw contour, implants can be placed on the chin and on the jaw angle. Facial implants are most commonly made of porous polyethylene (Medpor®) or silicone.

On the chin, silicone implants are most commonly inserted through a small incision under the chin. In up to 55 percent of cases, slight bone loss (0.5 to 2 millimeters) is observed in the area of the silicone implant on the chin after a few years. At the jaw angle, polyethylene implants are usually inserted through the oral mucosa.

The average complication rate of implants on the mandible is approximately 4.7 percent, with inflammation/wound healing problems and protrusion/slippage of the implant being the most common complications (Rojas YA, et al., 2018, Plast Reconstr Surg.). The side effects of hyaluronic acid for jawline correction are much lower compared to implants.

Injecting the masticatory muscle with a muscle relaxing preparation narrows the lower jaw. For chin augmentation of two to three millimeters, hyaluronic acid injections are the treatment of choice. Fillers are a safe, effective and permanent alternative to implants for contouring in the chin and jaw area.

The De Maio Filler Technique

The Brazilian plastic surgeon Dr. Maurício de Maio has described a concept of injecting hyaluronic acid into the face. De Maio has become known through numerous worldwide lectures on hyaluronic acid injections in cooperation with the company Allergan.

Maurício De Maio developed a holistic approach to treatment, rather than performing injections only on isolated areas of the face. The treatment recommendations described by de Maio are called MD CodesTM. In it, the treated facial regions are assigned respectively, an injection technique, an injection depth, a hyaluronic acid product, a filler quantity, and the treatment sequence is described [9].

Dr. Santos Stahl, like Dr. de Maio, trained as a plastic surgeon in Brazil and met Maurício de Maio at numerous congresses. Dr. Santos Stahl or private lecturer Dr. Stahl will discuss your individual needs during the initial consultation. Dr. Santos Stahl also follows a holistic approach to treatment. The treatment goals and plan are explained personally and in detail during the consultation.

CenterPlast only uses high-quality hyaluronic acid preparations. For optimal and harmonious overall results, not only individual wrinkles are injected, but also interacting areas are rejuvenated and beautiful facial features are emphasized. The success of the treatment and the level of satisfaction can also be significantly increased by the use of other techniques (muscle relaxant, treatment with the body’s own blood and microneedling and aesthetic procedures). For this reason, you are in the best hands with the specialist for plastic and aesthetic surgery and specialist for facial surgery, Dr. Santos Stahl.

De Maio Filler Technique

On average, results can be expected to last at least 18 to 24 months [10]. Depending on the hyaluronic acid and the volume injected, it can take up to two years after the first treatment before a small amount needs to be injected again to maintain the desired youthful appearance. Weight fluctuations, cigarette smoking or frequent sunbathing can accelerate a sagging of your face. Depending on the individual findings, a repetition or extension of the treatment with hyaluronic acid for a fresh appearance is also possible earlier.

How long does the Jawline correction last?

Ninety-seven percent of patients are very satisfied with the results of chin-jaw injections [11]. Depending on the type of skin, a slight reddening and swelling may occur at the puncture site, which usually subsides after two hours. Rarely, a bruise may occur, which will disappear on its own after two to three days. The risk of developing palpable nodules is about one percent [12].

Massage usually causes the irregularities to recede. For fast and effective resolution, in exceptional cases, under-injection can be used. The risk of inflammation is less than one percent. Nevertheless, always make sure that the doctor treating you is an expert in plastic surgery. Only a surgical specialist in the aesthetic plastic field has the appropriate training to carry out the overall treatment professionally and safely. In case of an emergency, he has the anatomical knowledge to take appropriate medical measures so that the final result is not jeopardized and there are no further complications.

In principle, the injury of a vessel and the obstruction of a bloodstream can never be excluded. In the hands of an experienced facial surgeon and thus specialists in aesthetic medicine, such incidents are extremely unlikely and treatable.
