Sweat gland reduction

The increased sweating, the hyperhidrosis, can lead to considerable suffering pressure. The most common form, primary focal hyperhidrosis, mainly affects the armpits (Hyperhidrosis axillaris), feet, hands or face, i.e. areas that are primarily responsible for emotional sweating.
After appropriate preparation, the sweat glands are sucked off with special cannulas. The scars through the small incisions are hardly recognizable later.

How can you prepare for a sweat gland removal?

  • All your questions about possible complications and alternative treatments should be answered in advance.
  • Keep nicotine and alcohol consumption to a minimum!
  • If necessary, take hormone-containing medication (the pill) temporarily.
  • Blood-thinning medication (e.g. ASS, Thomapyrin®) must be discontinued at least 10 days before the operation after consultation with your doctor.
  • Vitamin preparations (A, E) and food supplements (omega-3 fatty acids, St. John's wort preparations, etc.) must be discontinued at least 4 weeks before the operation.
  • A follow-up cost insurance should be taken out for the performance of aesthetic operations.
  • Operations limit the ability to travel by air. Therefore, do not plan any professional or private air travel in the 6 weeks after the operation!

How is a sweat gland removal performed?

  • The procedure takes about 1 hour.
  • The sweat gland suction is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia and, if desired, also in twilight sleep.
  • The small punctures are sutured with fine skin threads.

What do you have to consider after a sweat gland removal?

  • Postoperative clinical check-ups are recommended on the 3rd postoperative day and after 1, 2, 6 weeks as well as after 6 and 12 months.
  • Showering is possible immediately before the wound check up from the 3rd postoperative day.
  • The sutures are drawn between the 10th and 14th postoperative day.
  • Scar care (scar massage, sun protection, silicone overlay) from the 3rd postoperative week onwards helps to create inconspicuous scars.
  • Sport, saunas, swimming, heavy work and sunbathing should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
