Das Entfernen der obersten Hautschicht, der Hornhaut (Epidermis) wird als Deepithelialisierung bezeichnet. Die Lederhaut (Dermis) in der sich ein dichtes Gefäßnetzwerk befindet, bleibt bei dieser Technik unberührt.
Es erlaubt daher das Verschieben der größtmöglichen Menge an Gewebe (Lappenplastik) und wird daher häufig in der Brust- oder Gesäßchirurgie angewandt. Da hierbei die teilungsfähigen Zellen der obersten Hautschicht entfernt werden, wird diese Technik zur Hauttransplantation verwendet.
