Robert D. Acland (1941-2016) was a surgeon and scientist. Acland is one of the pioneers in plastic and reconstructive microsurgery. He developed microsurgical instruments (Acland microvascular clamp) and microsurgical sutures (10-0 nylon sutures and needles) that are still used today.
From 1972 to 1975, Acland trained as a plastic surgeon at Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. At the Canniesburn, Acland performed microsurgical procedures that could take up to fourteen hours.
