Follow-up cost insurance for plastic surgery

What is follow-up cost insurance?

Treatment is associated with opportunities, but also with risks. According to § 52 Abs. 2 SGB V states that “the health insurance fund must pay an appropriate share of the costs to the insured person” if risks requiring treatment arise after an aesthetic operation.

Despite all the care taken during planning and execution, complications may occur during and after the operation. This may result in further treatment, intensive care measures and operations.

Follow-up cost insurance should be taken out before aesthetic procedures are carried out. Follow-up cost insurance is used to cover the financial risks of any necessary follow-up treatment after an aesthetic operation that is not medically indicated.

The benefits and conditions of the insurance providers vary

We ask for your understanding that we are not allowed to make any recommendations.

We advise you to carefully check the insurance premiums and, in particular, the insurance benefits. We have compiled a list of the most important questions that you should discuss with your insurance provider:

  • How long does the insurance cover last?
  • What is the scope of the insurance benefit?
  • Is participation by the statutory health insurance fund a prerequisite?
  • Is a deductible required?
  • What is the maximum amount of cover?
  • Are aesthetic corrective treatments paid for?
  • What is the insurance cover if several types of treatment are combined?
  • What are the insurance benefits for the use of implants with regard to implant rupture, capsular contracture, slippage or twisting of the implant, breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma?
  • In general, there is a higher risk of surgery in smokers, patients with diabetes, obesity or advanced age and a lower risk in non-smokers, healthy, normal weight or younger patients. Are there different tariffs or different benefits depending on the state of health?
