Liposuction on the abdomen is also possible without surgery

Losing fat deposits increases your well-being and attractiveness. Reducing fat mass in the body is an important step towards a healthier life. New technology and increased efforts in research are producing new non-invasive procedures.

Compared to surgery, non-invasive technology is characterized by a shorter recovery time and fewer risks. Nevertheless, serious complications after liposuction affect less than one percent of patients. Obesity, diseases of the heart, lungs or metabolism, cigarette smoking and hormonal contraception are a health risk for you. These risks have an impact on an operation. Local anesthetics, well-tolerated painkillers, a relaxed atmosphere and mental distraction are used to treat and prevent your pain. With proactive aftercare, the swelling and bruising are significantly reduced within one to two weeks after liposuction. There are now many alternatives to surgery:

    • Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting®)
    • Ultrasound (Liposonix®)
    • Electromagnetic impulses (Emsculpt®)
    • Radiofrequency (Thermage®)
    • Laser lipolysis (SculpSure®)
    • the fat removal syringe

The effectiveness of these techniques cannot be compared with liposuction. The effect is limited to the fatty tissue immediately below the skin. The superiority of one of these methods has not yet been proven.

You can find more information on the various techniques and methods for liposuction on the abdomen in this video.

A fat-away injection cannot replace liposuction. Repeated treatment with a fat-away injection reduces circumscribed fat deposits (e.g. a double chin) to a mild to moderate degree. With liposuction, it is estimated that fifty times the amount of fatty tissue can be removed per procedure. You can find out more on our page on fat removal injections.

Your advantages of liposuction on the abdomen

    • Both the deep and superficial layers of fatty tissue are effectively reduced by liposuction of the abdomen.
    • Liposuction of the abdomen can be performed in a painless twilight sleep.
    • Patients can usually go home four to six hours after liposuction of the abdomen.
    • Liposuction can eliminate the abnormality from which you suffer greatly and increase your self-esteem.
    • Liposuction leads to greater satisfaction with your appearance and a better quality of life.
    • Studies suggest that liposuction has a positive effect on the health consequences of obesity1.

Special features of abdominal liposuction for women

Liposuction can help you achieve an accentuated waistline. The aim of liposuction for women is a firm stomach. Newer techniques can achieve more. High definition liposculpture (HDL) refines the contours of the abdomen. This emphasizes a depression in the vertical midline of the abdomen above the navel (champagne groove) and to the side of the straight abdominal muscles (in Latin “linea semilunaris”). In order to maintain harmonious proportions, your mons veneris should also be taken into account during liposuction. Microneedling (Dermaroller ®) treatment can also be used to improve skin elasticity and to treat pregnancies.

    Liposuction for men

Special features of liposuction on the abdomen in men

Over the last ten years, there has been an increasing demand for the removal of fat deposits in men. Liposuction of the abdomen is the most common procedure for men. The demands have increased with the development of ever better technologies. Finer contouring is possible thanks to vibratory liposuction and SAFELipo. The aim is to restore an athletic and attractive abdominal contour. A six-pack or washboard stomach is created by the horizontal subdivisions of the straight abdominal muscles. At the sides, the so-called V-bar rounds off the image of a well-toned stomach. A special liposuction technique (High Definition Liposculpture, HDL) can reveal the abdominal muscles. In this procedure, the deep fatty tissue is thinned out first. The natural contours of the muscles are then emphasized by further thinning out the superficial fatty tissue. The technology requires precise planning and a great deal of sensitivity.

Before and after pictures of abdominal liposuction are not legally permitted

Before/after pictures may not be shown on the Internet in accordance with the Therapeutic Products Advertising Act § 1 Paragraph 1 No. 2. In the opinion of the legislator, the comparative presentation of appearance before and after liposuction is inappropriately influential advertising. The evaluation of before/after pictures on the Internet does indeed require a certain degree of caution. The impression of an image is influenced by the camera setting, the perspective, the detail, the background and the lighting. Makeup or manipulated images can simulate results. The plastic and aesthetic surgery specialists at CenterPlast document the results under uniform conditions. During a consultation, the doctors will be happy to show you before and after pictures to show you the limits and possibilities of cosmetic surgery.

It is impossible to provide comprehensive specialist medical clarification and information without a comparative presentation. In order to fulfill the duty of disclosure pursuant to Section 630e para. 3 BGB, we therefore use simplified sketches of realistic treatment processes. Where possible, we explain the disadvantages and risks of an intervention with the greatest care and to the best of our knowledge and belief, with reference to scientifically based findings.

    FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Both women and men can develop a disturbing excess of fat on the stomach, waist or hips due to their constitution. Liposuction leads to greater satisfaction, improves well-being and quality of life.

However, certain requirements must be met.

Patients who are in good health are in the best position. Smoking a tobacco cigarette or e-cigarette reduces blood flow to the tissue for half an hour. This increases the risk of wound healing disorders, inflammation, thromboses and embolisms.

Your body mass index should ideally be under 30. If there is excess skin, weakness of the abdominal wall (rectus diastasis) or an abdominal wall hernia, additional treatment procedures should be planned.

Health insurance companies do not cover treatments to improve appearance. The abdominal liposuction technique is not covered by health insurance.

Only in rare cases, in which a so-called “pathological disfigurement” is present, does it make sense to apply for reimbursement of costs.

This is generally categorized as sagging skin hanging over the pubic area after massive weight loss. In such cases, the insured person can apply to their health insurance fund to have the costs of removing the fat apron covered.

The results of liposuction become more visible with each passing day. The slimmer figure is concealed by the swelling for the first ten days. The new body contours become clearer from week to week. The result is visible after four weeks.

The abdomen may feel a little hard and the surface of the skin a little numb. In the third month, these sensations usually recede completely.

The swelling, which can fluctuate during the course of the day, is then only minimal. 4 months after the operation, the final result can be seen in about 95% of patients.

A certain amount of swelling is unavoidable in the first few days after the operation. The injected fluid (tumescent solution) is used to prevent bruising. Most of the fluid is suctioned out during the procedure. A small proportion is taken up by the associations.

The rest of the fluid is excreted by the body via the kidneys in the hours following the operation. This phase of wound healing takes one to two weeks.

The swelling then subsides considerably. The compression garment reduces swelling. If there is severe swelling despite compression garments, lymphatic drainage should be started at an early stage.

The fine cannulas for liposuction are inserted through two to three millimeter incisions. The incisions lie in the fold lines of the skin and are barely visible.

Two tiny scars are located in the groin area so that they can also be hidden under a swimsuit.

A scar disappears deep inside the navel. The gentle, atraumatic and careful treatment of the tissue ensures inconspicuous scar healing.

The fine suture material ensures a fine line-shaped scar. To ensure that even the smallest scar does not give the impression of a planned operation, the skin incisions on the right and left side of the body are made in different places.

External characteristics that determine the attractiveness of women are diverse and complex. Numerous scientific studies have shown that the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is an important beauty feature in women.

A waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7 in women is perceived as particularly attractive by both men and women.

The evaluation is instinctive and only takes a fraction of a second2. The treatment of different areas of the body can be useful for maintaining or restoring beautiful proportions. Liposuction of the abdomen, legs and bottom is possible in a single procedure.

The total amount of fat tissue removed should be moderate so as not to increase the risk of surgery. The upper limit varies from person to person and depends on your body weight, your health and your lifestyle habits. In individual cases, liposuction in several procedures is the safer way to achieve an optimal result.

The Brazilian plastic surgeon Juarez Avelar was the first to combine the technique of liposuction with abdominoplasty in 1985. After him, the Brazilian Oswaldo Saldanha further refined the method.

The combination of the two procedures is considered safe and provides excellent aesthetic results. A more beautiful waist is achieved. The tightening can be carried out more effectively. This makes it easier to hide the scar. The contours can be corrected more precisely.

Details such as a champagne groove and a natural depression to the side of the straight abdominal muscles (in Latin “linea semilunaris”) can be emphasized. At the same time, the proportions of the mons veneris can be adapted to the slimmer waist.

There are no reports of negative effects of abdominal liposuction on subsequent pregnancies. The reduction of fatty tissue through liposuction of the abdomen is not affected by pregnancy and childbirth if you gain weight normally and eat properly.

Many women wish to have their physical changes corrected after pregnancy. The abdomen and breasts change the most after pregnancy.

After multiple pregnancies or late pregnancies, these changes often do not disappear on their own.

Excess skin can be noticeable around the belly button, on the hips or above a caesarean scar. There can be several reasons for a change in waist circumference. There may be an increase in fatty tissue in the abdominal wall or fatty tissue in the abdomen.

Pregnancy can weaken the connective tissue between the straight abdominal muscles. The belly button may bulge outwards. The elasticity of the skin can be reduced by the formation of stretch marks.

Liposuction effectively reduces the fatty tissue of the abdominal wall, hips and mons pubis. Weakness of the abdominal wall (rectus diastasis) is treated as part of a tummy tuck. Excess skin is removed as part of a mini-abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck. Stretch marks can be effectively improved by microneedling.

Several procedures can be safely and effectively combined to achieve an optimal esthetic result.

Fri. Dr. Santos Stahl or Privatdozent Dr. Stahl will address your individual needs during the initial consultation. During a consultation, the surgeons will take the time you need. It is very important to talk openly about the problem areas that bother them.

General information such as height, body weight, weight loss and pregnancies are also important for optimal advice. Medications and dietary supplements can have an effect on blood thinning or on the metabolism of narcotics. In order to be able to advise you on possible risks, circumstances such as cigarette smoking or elevated blood sugar levels will be investigated.

The surgeon will examine your contours and palpate your abdomen. Weakness of the abdominal wall (rectus diastasis), excess skin or abdominal hernias may require other surgical procedures.

Fat deposits on the hips (saddlebags) or pubic bone should not be ignored for a harmonious result. Reduced skin elasticity or pregnancy marks can also be treated. Finally, the waist circumference and hip circumference are measured.

The findings are carefully documented. It is important that you openly describe your expectations to the surgeon. The individual steps of the treatment and the costs are presented to you in a transparent and comprehensible manner.

Further examinations may be necessary before an operation (e.g. blood test or ultrasound examination). We look forward to meeting you for a consultation.

    • Moderate exercise immediately after the operation is beneficial for recovery.
    • Immediately after the procedure, we will of course arrange regular checks on your well-being with you
    • As a rule, you can resume your usual everyday activities after five to seven days.
    • The skin threads are removed after about ten days.
    • Previously fitted compression girdles and compression stockings should be worn continuously for three weeks.
    • If, in rare cases, there is still noticeable swelling after the second week, lymphatic drainage is started.

Many patients and doctors believe that a shower before the wound has healed is dangerous. Wounds are usually dressed and protected from moisture until the skin sutures are removed. However, numerous studies have shown that showering does not increase the risk of inflammation. Showering with tap water helps to clean a wound after an operation. Daily showering is very important for personal hygiene and well-being. Based on scientific findings and our many years of experience, we recommend showering with tap water on the third day after the operation, without soaking or rubbing the wounds. After showering, dry the wounds with a clean towel or with cool air from a hair dryer.

The surgeons at CenterPlast take numerous measures to prevent possible pain. Even small details such as listening to music help you to relax. You will be given pain-relieving medication that will also take away your anxiety.

A long-acting local anesthetic ensures that you do not feel any pain even after the operation. As a preventive measure, you will be given well-tolerated pain medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

You can also put on virtual reality goggles from CenterPlast during the operation and watch movies or your favorite series, which distract you and have been proven to reduce sensitivity to pain.

We will of course also provide you with the necessary pain medication to take home.

Body fat tissue can be divided into fatty tissue, which is located under the skin, and fatty tissue, which is located around the internal organs within the abdominal cavity.

The fatty tissue under the skin consists of two layers – the superficial and the deep fatty tissue.

A layer of connective tissue called Scarpa fascia separates these two layers. The shape, structure and metabolic properties of the fatty tissue in the respective regions differ. Women of childbearing age have less fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity. The fatty tissue mainly accumulates on the buttocks and thighs.

After the menopause, the fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity increases. In men, fat accumulates under the abdominal skin and in the abdominal cavity. An increase in fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity increases the risk of diabetes, heart attacks and vascular calcification. Liposuction can remove excess fatty tissue under the skin. The fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity, however, can only be reduced through lifestyle changes, good eating habits and physical activity.

How much fat can be removed from the abdomen varies from patient to patient. The exact amount is determined during the physical examination in a personal consultation.

Liposuction of the abdomen can be repeated several times. With a healthy diet and regular exercise, however, this is not necessary. Liposuction of moderate amounts of fat (one hundred milliliters per unit of body mass index) helps to keep the surgical risks low.

Liposuction can be planned in several stages for a large abdomen, especially if a tummy tuck is required. Corrections after liposuction should only be carried out when the final result is visible after six months.

Adipose tissue is a highly complex tissue. It consists of fat cells, connective tissue cells, phagocytes, white blood cells and stem cells. Stem cells have the unique property of being able to develop into different body cells (for example muscle or skin cells). Approximately five hundred times more stem cells can be obtained from adipose tissue than from bone marrow3.

The importance of stem cells for regenerative medicine and anti-ageing treatment has been known since 2006. In the months following an autologous fat treatment, the skin quality improves. Skin pores become finer, skin wrinkles are reduced and skin color becomes more even4.

Autologous fat is also used successfully to treat scars. The autologous fat is immediately available during liposuction. Allergic reactions are excluded. It therefore makes sense to take advantage of the many positive properties of autologous fat during liposuction.

An autologous fat treatment of the buttocks or breasts is easily possible during liposuction of the abdomen. Wrinkle injections and lip augmentation can be performed as part of liposuction.

Abdominal surgery using the keyhole technique or a large incision, as well as a caesarean section, can leave unsightly scars on the abdominal wall. Before liposuction on the abdomen, the scars must be critically examined to rule out an incisional hernia.

Indented scars can be corrected during liposuction. Supplementary autologous fat treatment can have a positive effect on the shape and elasticity of the scar. Larger scars, especially below the belly button, can be removed by a tummy tuck. Studies have shown that tummy tucks and liposuction can be performed safely for abdominal scars.

A special liposuction technique can be used to emphasize the appearance of the abdominal muscles. High definition liposculpture is a widely used technique in the USA and Brazil. CenterPlast Saarbrücken is one of the few specialized centers in Germany to offer this technique. Athletic contours of the abdominal muscles can be emphasized in both men and women. The technique is suitable for patients up to the age of fifty who have a moderate excess of fat. The body mass index should be under 26 for women and under 28 for men. For a good result, the skin should have good elasticity.

The operation is considered to be one of the safest, provided that certain safety measures are taken into account. Serious complications are often reported in the media. These are usually also associated with the aspiration of large amounts of fatty tissue. Unfortunately, liposuction is also offered by doctors without surgical training. However, plastic surgeons are actually the only group of specialists who learn liposuction as part of their further training.
    To avoid complications, the CenterPlast:

    • competent advice from experienced specialists in the selection of suitable treatment,
    • treatment by highly trained specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery,
    • monitoring and supervision by experienced anesthesiologists,
    • atraumatic surgical procedures and a sensitive surgical technique.

The aspiration of large amounts of fatty tissue, particularly in the lower abdomen, can lead to the accumulation of wound fluid (seroma). This is treated by a puncture under ultrasound control. The risk is higher in patients with a high body mass index and with ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Wound fluid can accumulate on the abdomen during the first week or three to four weeks after liposuction.

Liposuction can lead to further complications. Patients with pre-existing conditions or an unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, etc.) are more at risk. However, CenterPlast determines all relevant points in the consultation and advises you in detail. With a careful selection of the treatment method and a gentle surgical technique, complications are generally unlikely.
The specialists at CenterPlast also take a number of measures to keep the risk of bacterial infection as low as possible for you.
