Belly – importance in aesthetics
The belly plays a major role in a person’s attractiveness. The features of a beautiful tummy can be lost due to weight fluctuations or pregnancies. Both the ratio to the chest and the ratio to the hips are scientifically well-researched beauty features.
Fitted or loose-fitting dresses emphasize these attributes in a special way. In addition to the waist-to-hip ratio or the bust-to-waist ratio, there are other characteristics that characterize a beautiful tummy. These characteristics are easily recognizable in young and athletic people. A depression in the midline of the abdomen between the breastbone and the navel is called a champagne groove.
The navel contributes significantly to the aesthetic appearance of the abdomen. A youthful navel is elongated oval, not very deep and further down than in middle age. In slim people, the lateral boundary of the straight abdominal muscles can be seen. This lateral indentation is known as the semilunar line (linea semilunaris). The transition from the ribs to the abdominal muscles forms a gentle curve.
Fitness athletes can recognize the saw muscle here. The lower abdomen borders on the pubic mound, which can be distinguished from the lower abdomen by a slight elevation. In young, well-trained athletes, the V-shaped transition of the abdominal muscles to the iliac crest and the inguinal ligament can be seen.
The area is therefore referred to as the V-bar. The laterally palpable bone of the iliac crest represents the boundary between the hip and waist. The areas mentioned are also referred to as esthetic units (Matarasso et al. 2019. Aesthet Surg J). Consideration of these regions is of fundamental importance in order to achieve optimal aesthetic results with a tummy tuck and/or liposuction of the abdomen. Symmetry and skin quality must also be taken into account during treatment. Scars and stretch marks can be treated with autologous fat treatment and microneedling.
