Inflammation of a wound
Every wound is a potential entry point for germs. Inflammation may require medical or surgical treatment. In unfavorable cases, the pathogens can lead to life-threatening blood poisoning (sepsis), which requires intensive medical treatment. Inflammation of the subcutaneous fascia is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication.
Blood poisoning can lead to amputation of the limbs. This can also result in almost unbearable pain.
The development of inflammation is favored by a weak immune system or aggressive properties of the pathogens. Multi-resistant pathogens are insensitive to several antibiotics. Even a healthy person can be a carrier of a multi-resistant pathogen without being aware of it and without contracting the disease. If these germs lead to infections, they are difficult to treat. The risk of inflammation is influenced by the size of the wound, the duration of the operation and the body temperature, among other factors. Smoking, even if it is stopped four weeks before the operation, has been shown to be associated with a higher risk of inflammation.
