Fat above the knees: Causes, tips and treatment

Pinching women's hands on knees symbolize fat above the knees

Fat pads above the knees are a problem area for many people – especially women. They often avoid shorts or skirts and feel uncomfortable in their skin. But how do fat deposits form above the knees and what can you do about them?

In this article, you will find out the most common causes and helpful tips for getting firmer knees again. You can also find out when liposuction on the knees can be useful.

Why does fat develop above the knees?

Fat above the knee develops for various reasons, which we will present to you below.

Genetic predisposition:
Genetics is often a decisive factor when it comes to fat distribution in the body. As in many other areas of the body, some people may have a greater tendency to accumulate fat above the knees.

Hormonal changes:
Fat above the knees can also be influenced by hormones. Particularly in phases of hormonal changes, such as during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause, there can be an increased accumulation of fatty tissue.

Lack of exercise:
Too little exercise and a sedentary lifestyle often lead to the formation of fat above the knees. Especially if the leg muscles are not sufficiently exercised, such fat deposits can occur.

Unhealthy diet:
An unhealthy diet generally promotes the formation of excessive fat in the body, including above the knees. A lot of saturated fats and sugar are the main triggers.

Lipoedema:
Even with existing lipoedema, there may be an increase in fatty tissue above the knees. Lipoedema is a pathological fat distribution disorder that particularly affects women. This disease leads to the formation of excessive fat, usually in the area of the arms, buttocks and legs.

What problems does fat above the knees cause?

Fat above the knees can be disturbing for those affected, and not just for aesthetic reasons. The most common effects include

Restricted mobility:
The mobility of the joints can be impaired by excess fatty tissue on the knees. When climbing stairs or exercising, for example, an unpleasant feeling of tension can occur.

Pain and strain:
The additional weight puts more strain on the joints. In the long term, this can lead to joint problems as well as pain.

Skin irritation:
If severe, the excessive fatty tissue can cause the knees to rub against each other. Skin irritation can be a possible consequence, for example during physical activity or in warmer weather.

Difficult choice of clothing:
Those who want to cover their knees have a limited choice of clothing. Shorts, skirts and dresses are avoided, which makes you feel even more uncomfortable in high temperatures.

Reduced psychological well-being:
All of the points mentioned can lead to those affected feeling mentally unwell and suffering from reduced self-confidence.

How can you get rid of fat above the knees?

The following tips can help you get rid of excess fat above the knees. Be aware that it will take some time before you notice any changes. So be patient when it comes to reducing fat deposits on the knee.

Targeted training

You can tone and define your knees with the right exercises. Squats are the classic exercise. When doing them, make sure that your knees do not protrude beyond the tips of your feet and point slightly outwards. Your stomach and back should be tensed; you can stretch your arms forward.

Regular jogging, cycling and step aerobics can also be effective. In everyday life, you should prefer the stairs to the elevator and avoid crossing your legs when sitting to prevent varicose veins and water retention.

Healthy diet

A healthy diet makes it possible to reduce fat, which can also have an effect on the knee area. Make sure you eat plenty of fiber and protein as well as healthy fats. You should avoid too much sugar and processed foods as much as possible.

Skin care for beautiful knees

Proper care is important to keep your skin as smooth and elastic as possible. You can stimulate blood circulation with alternating showers. The cell metabolism is improved so that the skin can better absorb the active ingredients of the subsequent skin care.

A firming lotion that you massage in gently is useful here. The effect can be improved with a pressure or plucking massage and the knee area can also be tightened.

Treatment: When is liposuction on the knees advisable?

Fat deposits above the knees are often particularly stubborn and cannot be completely combated by exercise or diet. If you have problems with this and feel that the excess fatty tissue is a problem, liposuction on the knee can be a possible solution to get rid of fat above the knees.

Using fine microcannulas, we suction out the fat deposits and can thus remove them permanently. This enables an aesthetic adjustment to the remaining body contours. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis in twilight sleep. The resulting scars are barely visible later on.
